Abstract

Sex, love, and friendship play an integral role in Immanuel Kant's conception of human life. Against common prejudices, Kant provides substantial contributions to the philosophical discussion of these topics. This unique collection of essays sheds light on how the notions function in Kant's philosophy, both individually and in conjunction with each other. The essays examine intertwined issues such as theory of sexuality, marriage (including same-sex marriage), morality and sexual objectification, love and autonomy, love of human beings, the conceptual structure of love, friendship, misanthropy, and the highest good. The contributors include internationally well-known experts in the field. They approach the topics diversely from historical, philosophical, critical, and interpretative perspectives. The collection will be an invaluable resource for Kant scholars and for anyone interested in affective social relations in the history of philosophy and beyond.

Abstract

Ethical questions are often associated with practical dilemmas: questions in morality, in other words. This volume, by contrast, asks questions about morality: what it is, and to what it owes its precarious authority over us. The focus on metaethics is sustained throughout, via a wide range of distinguished philosophical perspectives.

Abstract

This treatise defends a middle ground between the view that there is a set of standards binding all rational beings (universalism), and the view that differences in morals reduce ultimately to matters of taste (skepticism). It begins with a sustained critique of universalist moral thories.

Abstract

Schweitzer argues that knowledge of human nature does not lead to any unique moral theory, and that the material element of our civilization has become far more important than its spiritual counterpart. This collection of 15 of Schweitzer's most effective essays is a compelling introduction to this remarkable thinker.
